QUESTIONS

10.14.2010 · Posted in Main Content

Most beginners have doubts about how to ask questions, or what word they should to use. Let's review questions in Spanish.

  • Qué (What): we going to use "Qué" to ask about the definition of something: ¿Qué es "un perro"? (What is a dog?) Es un animal mamífero con 4 patas, etc. (It is a mammal, with four legs, etc.)

Or: ¿Qué estudias? (What do you study?) ¿Qué quieres comer? (What do you want to eat?)

Note: we never ask with "Qué", What's your name? or what is your favorite color?, for these questions we use Cuál.

  • Cuál (Which) Cuáles (Plural): we use "Cuál" when we have options, and you can choose between them. (Which do you like better, the red sweater or the blue?) ¿Cuáles son tus actores favoritos? (Who are your favorite actors?) And always: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What's your name?)
  • De dónde (From where): with "De dónde" we are asking for the origin or the nationality of a person, or where something was made. For example: ¿De dónde es Juan? (Where is Juan from?) (Where is "the milanesa"from?)
  • Dónde (Where): is used for location. ¿Dónde está el gato? (where is the cat?) El gato está debajo de la mesa. (The cat is under the table) ¿Dónde está Madrid? (Where is Madrid?) Madrid está en España (Madrid is in Spain).
  • A dónde: is to ask with verbs that indicate movement: ¿A dónde vas los domingos? (Where do you go on Saturdays?) ¿ A dónde se mudó Federico? (Where did Juan move?) ¿A dónde viajaron el año pasado? (Where did they travel last year?)
  • Cuánto (how much): ¿Cuánto cuesta/n……? (How much is it?)
  • Cuántos/as (how many): ¿Cuántos estudiantes vinieron? (How many students came?)

Note: always, ¿Cuántos años tienes? (How old are you?)

  • Cuán: we use "Cuán" when we want to ask about the amount of an adjective. For example: ¿Cuán lindo es Brad Pitt? (How cute is Brad Pitt?) ¿Cuán grande es Brasil? (How big is Brasil?)
  • Cuándo (When): We are asking for a date. ¿Cuándo fuiste a China? (When did you go to China?) ¿Cuándo vas a venir a visitarme? (When are you going to come to visit me?)
  • Por qué (Why): We use "Por qué" to ask about the reason of something. (Why didn't you tell me about your wedding?) Porque aún no tengo la fecha (Because I don't have the date yet).
  • Cómo (How): we are asking for a physical description, psychic description or a mental state description. ¿Cómo es Julián? (What's Julian like/look like) Julian es alto, rubio, un poco arrogante, pero muy inteligente (Julian is tall, blond, a little arrogant, but very intelligent). ¿Cómo está Julián? (How is Julián?) (Julián is fine, but lately he is very tired because  he is working a lot)
  • Quién (Who)/Quiénes (Plural): I'm asking for the subject. ¿Quién es tu mejor amigo? (Who is your best friend?) Es Ricardo (Is Richard). ¿Quién descubrió América? (Who discovered America?) Cristobal Colón descubrió América (Cristobal Colón discovered America). ¿Quiénes son tus estudiantes? (Who are your students?) John, Matt and Claire son mis estudiantes. (John, Matt and Claire are my students)

Note: we never use Yo in the spanish phrases because the verb included the person, with exception of the question WHO.

respuesta.

There Is a Power Greater Than Ours

Posted: 22 Oct 2010 12:00 AM PDT

"Recognize that there is a power greater than ours, that no matter how good a man is, he is not good enough, that no matter how wise he is, he is not wise enough, that no matter how strong he is, he is not strong enough for all of the things which he will face in life, and that there is a source of power to which he can go with the assurance that he will be listened to and that there will be a response."

Re: Young Single Adult Gems

A Pattern to Receive the Holy Ghost

Posted: 15 Oct 2010 12:00 AM PDT

"Heavenly Father has given a simple pattern for us to receive the Holy Ghost not once but continually in the tumult of our daily lives. The pattern is repeated in the sacramental prayer: We promise that we will always remember the Savior. We promise to take His name upon us. We promise to keep His commandments. And we are promised that if we do that, we will have His Spirit to be with us (see D&C 20:77, 79). Those promises work together in a wonderful way to strengthen our testimonies and in time, through the Atonement, to change our natures as we keep our part of the promise."

Thinking of you.

Pensando en ti.

Strength from Understanding the Atonment

Richard G. Scott, "He Lives! All Glory to His Name!," Ensign, May 2010, 75–78

This Easter, as you remember the Resurrection and the price paid and the gift given through the Atonement, ponder what the scriptures teach of those sacred events. Your personal witness of their reality will be strengthened. They must be more than principles you memorize. They must be woven into the very fiber of your being as a powerful bulwark against the rising tide of abomination that infects our world.

...

There is an imperative need for each of us to strengthen our understanding of the significance of the Atonement of Jesus Christ so that it will become an unshakable foundation upon which to build our lives. As the world becomes more devoid of foundational standards and as honor, virtue, and purity are
increasingly cast aside in the pursuit of appetite, our understanding of and faith in the Atonement of Jesus Christ will provide strength and capacity needed for a successful life. It will also bring confidence in times of trial and peace in moments of turmoil.

Happy Future

Jeffrey R. Holland, "This, the Greatest of All Dispensations," Ensign, Jul 2007, 52–58

Is there a happy future for you and your posterity in these latter days? Absolutely! Will there be difficult times when those ominous latter-day warnings and prophecies are fulfilled? Of course there will. Will those who have built upon the rock of Christ withstand winds, hail, and the mighty shafts in the whirlwind? You know they will. You have it on good word. You have it on His word! That "rock upon which ye are built … is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men [and women] build they cannot fall" (Helaman 5:12).

edifican, no caerán" (Helamán 5:12).

Trust In God

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 ¶ aTrust in the Lord with all thine bheart; and lean not unto thine cown dunderstanding.
6 In all thy ways aacknowledge him, and he shall bdirect thy cpaths.

Proverbios 3:5-6

5 aConfía en Jehová con todo tu corazón,
y no te apoyes en tu propia bprudencia.
6 aReconócelo en todos tus caminos,
y él enderezará tus veredas.

Happiness and Single

Don't Put Off Being Happy

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 12:00 AM PDT

"Being single does not mean you have to put off being happy. As President Harold B. Lee (1899–1973) once said: 'Happiness does not depend on what happens outside of you, but on what happens inside of you. It is measured by the spirit with which you meet the problems of life.' "

James E. Faust, "Welcoming Every Single One," Ensign, Aug. 2007, 8
